Dutch elm disease:

The spores of the fungi (Ophiostoma ulmi or O. novo-ulmi) get into the wood of the elm through the large elm beetle. Affected elms usually die very quickly. Tens of millions elms have died of this within the past 40 years. No treatment is possible.
